Mission
Our Congregation of priests and brothers has a special mission: to follow the example of Jesus Christ, the Redeemer, by preaching the Word of God to the poor and attending to the pastoral needs of the most abandoned.
Explanation
Known officially as the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer (CSsR), the Redemptorists were founded in Naples, Italy in 1732 by St. Alphonsus Liguori. St. Alphonsus was a missionary who went in search of the most abandoned souls. He chose to live among those who were forgotten, those who did not realize that God loved them. As such, Redemptorists are apostles of conversion. Their special mission is to bring the plentiful redemption of Christ through preaching the Word of God.
On September 28, 1899, a Belgian Redemptorist named Fr. Achilles Delaere was sent to Brandon, Manitoba, specifically to minister to Polish Catholics. He quickly learned that many Catholics in the region that had been classified either as Polish or as Orthodox were, in fact, Byzantine-Ukrainian Catholics. In addition to being misunderstood, these Ukrainian immigrants were living in great material and spiritual poverty. In true Redemptorist fashion, in 1906 Fr. Delaere embraced the Byzantine-Ukrainian tradition in order to serve these "most abandoned" souls. Today, the Ukrainian Redemptorists continue this ministry especially to Ukrainian Catholics in parishes in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and New Jersey, and in favour of the poor at The Welcome Home Mission in Winnipeg. In addition, members of the Yorkton Province are actively engaged in preaching missions across Canada, the United States, and Ukraine.
