Mission
Our mission is to proclaim the good news by directing our entire lives toward that oneness for which Jesus Christ was sent. As Jesus was sent to show God's love to the world, we too are sent to make Christ visible by our very being, by sharing our love, faith, and hope. We carry out this mission through ministry focused on education.
Charism
The School Sisters of Notre Dame is an international community of more than 3,700 vowed women religious. Our roots reach back to 19th century Bavaria, Germany. Through education, Blessed Theresa of Jesus Gerhardinger, our foundress, and the women who joined her sought to help remedy the social ills of the times caused by the Napoleonic wars. She responded to urgent needs, preferring the poor and educating with a world vision The community quickly grew from its roots in Germany through Europe and then into the Americas and beyond.
Our ministries focus on education in its many forms. For us, education means enabling persons to reach the fullness of their potential as individuals created in God's image and assisting them to direct their gifts toward building the earth.
Canadian Sisters serve in British Columbia, Alberta, the Northwest Territories, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, England, Italy, Africa, South America and the United States. As educators, we are teachers, justice advocates, parish ministers, spiritual directors, directors of lay formation programs, canon lawyers, nurses, treasurers, etc.
We are called to be deeply inserted in our world, to address its basic needs and to lay down our lives that others may live. Our charism is based on our conviction that the world can be transformed through the transformation of persons.
