Mission
The Franciscan Friars of the Atonement, are a distinct Religious community, within the Franciscan family, dedicated to bringing a reconciling spirit to a suffering world through missionary apostolates, by working for Christian unity, creating opportunities for interreligious dialogue, and being a witness to the Gospel by living and working with the poor.
Charism
We, the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement, are a Third Order Regular Community within the Franciscan Family. Our foundational charism perceived through our Franciscan understanding of simplicity, poverty and peacemaking is centered in the mystery of the Atonement, the saving work of Christ reconciling all to the Father through the Holy Spirit.
The Franciscan Friars of the Atonement were founded in the Anglican Church in 1898 at Graymoor, Garrison, N.Y. As the understanding of our reconciling charism developed, the Order in 1909 began the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity as a witness to the unity which all Christians long for. The Week of Prayer is now celebrated by the universal Church. In 1910 they were received into the Roman Catholic Church by Pope Pius X. We continue today to live out this reconciling charism by following St. Francis' admonition to us , his children: "We have been called to heal wounds, to unite what has fallen apart and to bring home those who have lost their way."
The Friars attempt to live out their understanding of this reconciling call by ministering in pastoral and ecumenical ministries and by embracing the poor and marginalized in all our encounters with humanity. In Canada the Friars of the Atonement have ministered in the Archdiocese of Vancouver, the Diocese of Nelson, B.C., the Archdiocese of Toronto, the Diocese of London, Ontario, the Diocese of Antigonish, and the Archdiocese of Halifax.
