Diocese of Antigonish
![]() |
About Us
The Roman Catholic Diocese of Antigonish comprises the 7 counties of Northeastern Nova Scotia, these are three counties on the mainland (Antigonish, Pictou and Guysborough Counties) as well as all of Cape Breton Island (Richmond, Inverness, Victoria and Cape Breton Counties). The Seat of the Diocese is located in Antigonish at St. Ninian Cathedral with the Chancery Office located in that community. However, the Pastoral Center (administrative headquarters) is located in Sydney.
Originally, the Diocese was a part of the Diocese of Quebec (which included all of what is now known as Canada during the 17th and 18th Centuries) and later a part of the Diocese of Halifax upon its establishment.
About Vocations
A vocation to the priesthood and/or religious life is truly a gift from God. It is a call to draw closer, in service, to our Lord. The key word is service. "If any one would be first, they must be last of all and servant of all" (Mk 9:35). As Pope John Paul II has said, priestly or religious vocations are always, by their very nature, calls to the generous service of God and neighbour.
The vision of the Second Vatican Council says that vocations are part of the shared responsibility of all God's people in building community and working together for effective mission as Church. That means each of us, in our own way, is responsible for encouraging vocations within our parish communities.
Everyone deserves to be asked if they have ever considered how God is calling them. Many people never get asked the question. If you've come to this website with maybe even a small question in the back of your mind, then let me ask you right now ...
- Have you ever considered a vocation to priesthood or religious life?
- Do you feel that perhaps God is calling you to move forward in your spiritual journey?
- Do you have a sense of being unfulfilled? Does the possibility of a vocation to priesthood and/or religious life bring you a sense of peace and hope?
If your answer to any of those questions is yes, then I would be pleased to speak with you. By getting in touch with me, you're not making any commitment - all you're saying is that you want to know more. And that's where any real journey begins. We might correspond. We might meet face to face and have a chat. Maybe I can direct you to someone who might be able more appropriately to answer your questions, as in the case of religious communities of either women or men.
